At the beginning of the twentieth century, the orchestra was referred to as “fifteen and piano” (no matter how it actually added up), however the piano part was often only used by the conductor.
Included Violin I/II, Viola, Cello, Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet I/II, Bassoon, Horns I/II, Trumpets I/II, Trombone, Drums
First violin had the melody, second violin and viola played 'after-beats', cello played a sustained countermelody or doubled the bass. Oboe played melody; bassoon often played in unison with the cello. First trumpet played melody on the repeat and second trumpet played thirds and sixths under the first. Trombone doubled the bass.
A Broadway-sized orchestra consisted of around 25- take the 16 parts and add more strings
