Description:

First post office established at Gilbert Creek mill. Samuel Gilbert appointed postmaster. Before this date, the only post office was in Prairie du Chien. Also a stagecoach stop on the route from Black River Falls to St. Anthony Falls (MN). Territorial road extending from Prairie du Chien to Hudson reaches Menomonie Mills.
