jan 1, 2450 BC - Stele of Vultures
Description:
Around 2450 BC, the stele of Vultures was built to commemorate King Eanatum of Lagash's victory over the nearby Umma city-states. It provides us with our first glimpse of a well-organized army: a phalanx of heavy spearmen, eight wide and six deep, wearing helmets, and armed with massive rectangular shields. The stele depicts Eanatum riding on his battlewagon, a sickle sword and spear at his sides, and a pair of light javelins.
