dec 24, 1865 - Ku Klux Klan is Formed

Description:

In the area of Pulaski Tennessee, after the end of the Civil War, 6 veterans from the Confederacy gathered and established what would be known as the Ku Klux Klan. This underground society of White Supremacists is described by Andrew Glass (3), as a faction with violence written throughout it, "In the aftermath of the Civil War, the KKK quickly morphed from a social fraternity to a violent group that sought to push back against key Reconstruction policies championed by Radical Republicans in Congress — policies that for the first time enfranchised former African-American slaves. By 1869, the KKK regularly engaged in wanton destruction of property, assaults and murder, prompting Forrest, a moderate, to seek in vain to disband the organization. Masked men shot into houses and burned them, sometimes with the occupants still inside. They drove successful black farmers off their land." (Glass 1). Here Glass is displaying the amount of chaos that the KKK were trying to instill, and also how they were trying to disband the reconstruction policies, as the policies favored their enemies, the African Americans. The K.K.K. was also the first major group that initiated in violence against African Americans outside of the cruel acts that happened within slavery. With that being said, the early movements of the K.K.K exhibited the anger featured within White Supremacists, and the racial tension and violence that would result from this anger .

(3) Andy Glass is now a writer for POLITICO, and also considers himself as an online pioneer as he had vision for the internet similar to those of Bill Gates.
