Dred Scott v. Sandford, 60 U.S. 393, also known as the Dred Scott case, was a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on US labor law and constitutional law. The national Supreme Court declared in 1857 that the slave Dred Scott, even though he had lived for some time in free territories, could not sue for his freedom because he was property, not a person. There were many riots and revolts that ensued this decision.
