jun 1, 204 - Funerary epitaph
Description:
Earliest known Christian funerary engraving, recounting the life of one Abercius of Hierapolis, a man of means who dictated his own epitaph ahead of time. Abercius, in language of simple allegory, declares himself a disciple of the Good Shepherd, speaks of his journeys to Rome and Syria, and mentions Baptism and the Eucharist. The inscription also gives evidence to the spread of Christianity, in that “everywhere” Abercius went, he found “associates”.
