jan 1, 170 - Apelles

Description:

Marcion’s school produces a subsequent generation of thought-leaders who either follow in his dualistic thinking (Potitus and Basilicus), favor three divine forces instead of two (Syneros), or reject dualism in favor of an unexplainable unitary First Principle, whose prophecies in the Old Testament are simply inconsistent with one another and unreliable (Apelles). Apelles seems to be most well-known of these. He may have rejected bodily resurrection. He may have been removed from the Marcionite churches over his association with/marriage to a female prophetess named Philumena, whose revelations he promoted. Apelles seems to have happily associated with proto-orthodox sectarians (Rhodon) and favored the salvic power of pro-social behavior over theological disputations.

Apelles appears to reject docetism, proposing that Jesus assembled a real body from cosmic elements during his descent to earth, and dispersed it upon his ascension.
