jan 1, 30 - John the Baptist active
Jesus's ministry, death
Description:
The apocalyptic prophet John the Baptist is active in Galilee. Jesus is baptized into John’s movement. After John is arrested, Jesus either branches off from or absorbs John’s followers into his own apocalyptic movement.
Jesus preaches the impending arrival of the eschatological Son of Man. It's possible that he does consider himself a messianic figure, but a traditional, kingly messiah; he tells his twelve leading disciples that they will be regents over the tribes Israel under him. HIs message is stridently anti-wealth, but he may have acquired at least one wealthy follower whom he is particularly close to or even loves (a rich young man?). The material needs of those spreading the news of the imminent kingdom need to be taken care of by those who hear and accept the message. Most of Jesus' followers are drawn from among the less powerful and less reputable of the day, including women and people generally considered lowlifes. Jesus' family may have thought he had gone insane, and his ministry is not received well in his hometown of Nazareth.
After leading a group of followers to Jerusalem during the leadup to Passover, Jesus causes a notable disturbance in the Herodian temple, is arrested, and is executed. This takes place during the administration of Pontius Pilate as Roman governor of Judea.
