The Catholic Telegraph 1891, Nov 19 - Cannot Be Permanently Fooled
As Lincoln remarked, "You may tool ail the people some of the time, or some of the people all the time, but, you cannot fool all the people all tho time.” In fact, you cannot fool the great number for any length of time, and they will not fool themselves very long at a time. There is too much sound sense among them to make delusion a permanent working force in politics. The Russian loan failed to be taken in France, after all the French protestations of regard for the czar. What was the reason? Public rumor at once attributed it to the Rothschilds, in revenge for persecutions of the Jews in Russia. But those sphinx like operators who pull the wires of the Punch and Judy shows that go on upon the thrones of Europe gave no sign. Then the Russian minister at Paris asked the French government to bring to bear its influence on the Rothschilds and induce, them to cease their opposition to the 'Russian loan, for the czar’s country was in extremities. The great money baron was visited with the message. It was not the Rothschild opposition that made the Russian loan fail to go. he answered politely. It was the bad crops in Russia, the great risks and the small profits offered by the loan that made it fail. He said nothing more, but who knows?
