may 4, 1882 - Chinese Exclusion Act

Description:

U.S. Congress passed this legislation in 1882, it prohibited all further immigration from China. The door stayed shut until 1943. This bill shows the racist attitudes of the time toward Chinese immigrants. It is a slap in the face after Chinese people were used as the primary labor force of the Central pacific R.R. Discrimination toward Chinese people was particularly prominent in California and the West coast where most Chinese Americans lived.
