nov 24, 1712 - Abbe Charles-Michel de l'Epee is born

Description:

Abbe Charles-Michel de l'Epee is considered the Father of the Deaf and is a fundamental person for the Deaf because he founded several things for the Deaf in France. In total, he established 21 schools!

1750- He starts the first social/religious association for the deaf. This allowed deaf people to have a place to come together.

1771- He established the first public, free, deaf school now called Insitut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris (the National Institute for Deaf Children of Paris).

Deaf children would come to the school using their home signs, Abbe de L'Eppe learned all their signs, combined them into one language which became Old French Sign Language. This eventually lead to ASL.
