Description:

In 1884 the government created the potlatch law. A potlatch was a ceremonial feast practiced by the first nations of the pacific coast in which gifts are offered or destroy in a show of wealth. This help create more bonds between he many first nation communities. But the government did no understand any of this. They created a law that banned all of the potlatches between the first nation communities thinking that the potatches were useless and reckless. Anyone that was caught doing a potlatch was jailed for 2-6 months and any of the sacred objects where taken away.
