Things were bad for the Dakota on the reservation> On August 17th Dakota men killed 5 settlers and the convinced Little Crow to go to war. On August 18th, the Dakota attack the Lower Sioux Agency, killing traders and government employees. Most Dakota did not fight, the ones that did fight were mostly young men.
