Description:

Operation Market Garden was the largest airborne allied operation in history and one of the greatest tactical errors of the allies in World War II. It took place between 17 and 25 September 1944 on Dutch soil and had as its fundamental objective to open a path of invasion, with which the allies could penetrate the very heart of the Third Reich and end the war before the Christmas of that same year. The war, far from over, would last almost another year.

After the liberation of France and Belgium, the Allied troops advanced towards Germany fervently jubilant. The British needed a military operation to assert their position against the United States and finally their wishes were met, and the plan was approved.

The operation was divided into two parts. One was Market, which consisted of an airborne invasion by, among others, the famous 101st US Airborne Division or the 1st British Airborne Division, with the aim of capturing several strategic bridges in the towns of Eindhoven, Veghel, Nijmegen, Grave and Arnhem, which would enable the Allied advance to Germany. Garden corresponded to the allied invasion by land, which would be carried out from Belgium by the XXX British Army Corps and would have as mission to link with the airborne divisions.

Allied bombings on the German defenses at dawn on the 17th were the first to arrive. During the days of the 17th and 18th, thousands of paratroopers jumped on their objectives. In the first phases of the operation, the invasion had some success. Bridges were captured, although some were flown by the Germans. In Eindhoven, the population welcomed the Americans with open arms. But the worst was yet to come.

It is said that the Germans found the secret planes of the operation in a plane downed. This fact gave the Germans the advantage of foreseeing the movements of the enemy and, therefore, that their situation became more advantageous.

Shortly after starting the operation, the Germans organized and opposed a tenacious resistance. The Waffen-SS inflicted severe damage on the allies. The 82nd US Airborne Division witnessed the Nazi war bulldozer, fighting in hard confrontations. But without a doubt, the most bloody stage of the battle would be lived throughout the fight in the town of Arnhem, where the 1st British Airborne Division was nailed.

As the days passed, the situation became more disadvantageous for the allies, the battle front stagnated, the Germans fought fiercely and already had shipments of soldiers and war material directly from the Third Reich. It was clear that Operation Market Garden had failed.

On September 21, the Germans had perfectly surrounded the allied divisions. The Arnhem bag or mousetrap was an example of this.

On September 22, Operation Berlin began, which consisted of the rescue of the Allied soldiers behind the German lines, an operation that would last until September 27.

Market Garden, meant for Germany to moral blunt victory that had been urgently needed. With Holland assured, and then assured of the fastest routes to Berlin, Hitler could breathe and focus again on the Soviet Union. For the allies, this operation meant a serious setback that in the medium term they would regret. To begin with, they would have to organize again and look for an alternative route to Germany. But the worst and what in the long run would be more disastrous, is the valuable time that would be lost to the detriment of the rapid Soviet advance towards Berlin.

One thing was clear to the allies, and that is that Germany still had military capacity, an aspect that a few months later would become patent again in the Battle of the Bulge. Edit
