In the morning The Dakota warriors surround the town New Ulm. The fighting quickly moves into the town. Using a building for cover The Dakota soldiers start to fire from windows and doorways. Little Crow and other warriors set fire to the buildings by the water causing confusion and chaos because of the smoke. The defenders continue to protect and after hours of fighting the defenders make a desperate charge on the Dakota they even set fire to the building the Dakota were using as cover. At sunset the Dakota retreat leaving 60 wounded, 32 dead, and more than a ⅓ of the town demolished.
