Description:

Writing a few years after the organization of the Zionist movement in
1897, Dr. Max Nordau, a prominent European Zionist leader and close
associate of Theodor Herzl, said:
*“Zionism’s only hope is the Jews of America.” In large measure he spoke correctly. But for the financial support and political pressure of American Jews, a group whose numbers and socioeconomic importance made them by midcentury the most powerful Jewish community in modern history, Israel might not have been born in 1948.
-The Americanization of Zionism, 1897–1948 by Naomi W. Cohen
*Maccabaean, Vol. 7 (1904).

Naomi W. Cohen:
One of the first women scholars in the new field of Jewish studies, Naomi W. Cohen earned a reputation as one of the foremost historians of American Jewry. A graduate of Columbia University, Cohen worked as a professor at several institutions. Cohen’s research, beginning with Not Free to Desist: The American Jewish Committee, 1906–1966, published in 1972, focused mainly on the intersection of religion and politics in American Jewish life and included important scholarship on American Zionism and on Jewish-Christian relations in America. Two of her later books were honored with the National Jewish Book Award. In 1996, she retired from teaching and made Aliyah. The following year, she was honored as the National Foundation of Jewish Culture’s Laureate in Historical Studies.
