On the week running up to Erika's birthday, which Sam and all their friends want to make special, Erika acts oddly. Cold, distant and even snaps at him at one point to leave him alone. On her actual birthday, Anna says Erika is holed up in the dorm and won’t leave; won’t eat or talk to anyone.
Sam visits her and climbs into bed with her. He just holds her as she cries. Eventually, she calms and he gifts her his present. She is visibly touched. They kiss, they have sex and everything seems okay again.
Until a few days later when he sees the self-harm marks on her thighs. Sam doesn’t know what to do. Feels helpless. Starting to understand that Erika is a lot darker than he realised.
