jan 1, 1980 - Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act
Description:
Carter signs into the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. This provided for the federal protection of over 157,000,000 acres of land. While having provision for the use of land by Native Alaskans, it also limited commercial development and use. For this reason, it was considered controversial in Alaska at the time it passed. However, it has continued to perserve Alaska's natural resources.
