jan 1, 1900 - Welsbach lamp piece
Description:
This lamp piece is inscribed "WELSBACK trade mark reg." Based on a comparative study of the font, lattice metalwork of the bottom of the piece, and engraved rim, it dates to 1900. The second picture is a matching illustration from a 1900 Welsbach catalog. The third image shows the three burner styles including this piece. A Welsbach lamp was likely installed for gas lighting after a kitchen fire. There is no written documentation of the fire, but restoration carpenter John Schnitzler estimated the date based on charring in the kitchen, staircase, and second floor as well as early twentieth century repairs.
Welsbach lamps were sold in individual pieces, including the glass lamp, burner, brackets, arms. Customers would mix and match what size and features they wanted from catalogs. The company was most well known for its invention of an exclusive rights to the Welsbach mantle. Fibers infused with thorium and cerium resulted in a bright white light ideal for street lighting when a gas flame is introduced.
