sep 28, 1939 - Soviet-Estonian Mutual Assistance Treaty

Description:

This was a treaty signed by the Soviet Union and Estonia, promising sovereignty and independence for both parties while letting the Soviet government construct military bases in Estonia. The peace between them was supposed to last for 10 years. On September 24, the Estonian foreign minister, Karl Shelter, was approached by the USSR in Moscow to make the treaty, and he conceded. These military bases constructed by the Soviets would become influential in the eventual Soviet takeover that would ensue in June of 1940. There would also be a similar Soviet-Latvia Pact.
