Earliest precise system of plainchant notation circa early 11th C. by Italian Benedictine monk, Guido, from Arezzo (born ca. 991; died ca. 1033) who assigned red and yellow lines to specific pitches. Mnemoanic (solmization) for teaching chant to choir boys was also developed.
