Martin Luther was a German priest, theologian and author, born in 1483. In his studies he formed different views on Christianity, and opposed the Roman Catholic Church. Eventually he was excommunicated by the Pope, and his writings sparked the Protestant Reformation
In 1517, Luther published his Ninety-five Theses, essentially a list of 95 reasons justifying the opposition to the Catholic Church. This spawned the Protestant Reformation, which took place in much of Germany, Britain, Scandinavia, and Holland.
