Description:
Former workers on the Hacienda Pinsaquí testified to the importance
of the Colombian market, ‘‘from whence came many muleteers to haul
textiles’’ (Males : ; my translation). By the s, Otavalos selling
meat or cloth in Tulcán had begun to cross the border into Colombia to
sell textiles. Still, travel was not common in that era: ‘‘The most enterprising
person in all Peguche, Rosita Lema, had never been across the
valley to Cotacachi’’ (Parsons : ).
