jan 1, 1976 - 1976 Aboriginal Land (Northern Territory) Act
Description:
The 1967 referendum was a significant aspect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, they were still faced with issues. For 200 years their land rights were taken away by white settlers and despite many communities pushing against the government they still faced the harsh cruelty of the government infringing on their rights. For example, when the Yolngu people refused to give away land for a mine, it was ignored, and the mine went ahead. This had highlighted the need for Indigenous Australians to be in control of their homelands.
