nov 15, 1838 - Myall Creek Massacre
Description:
Myall Creek Massacre was the first Aboriginal massacre in Australia and resulted in the public hanging of seven British men at the Sydney Gaol on the 18th of December 1838. These men were responsible for the massacre of aboriginal people. However, the approach in which this case was handled was appalling. The ‘Black Association’ was a group of landowners who intimidated jurors to be absent in court and when on trial, despite the evidence the jury had declared the defendants not guilty in under 20 minutes. However, Attorney-General Plunkett was dissatisfied and filed a case against the defendants for the murder of an Aboriginal child. Plunkett believed he can prove them guilty with new evidence and by splitting the group of 11 in 2, one group of 7 men and the other group of 4. The group of 7 were found guilty and hung publicly while the group of 4 were persecuted by Yintayintin who was to provide an eyewitness account but disappeared soon after, so the remaining 4 men walked free.
