sep 1, 1905 - Alberta and Saskatchewan Became Provinces
Description:
The area that would later become Alberta and Saskatchewan was initially purchased as a way to stifle an expansionist America. Britain was worried about America encroaching on this territory so they purchased it from the Hudson’s Bay Company initially naming it the Northwest Territories. Later, it was turned into two provinces in 1905 as one large one would’ve been too big to properly administer. This was done during Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier's administration. Saskatchewan and Alberta have since become integral parts of the Canadian economy. Alberta provides the majority of natural gas, crude oil, and coal supplies in Canada. Not to mention only ranking 2nd in agricultural contributions when looking at farm cash receipts, as Statistics Canada has done. Only Saskatchewan ranks higher, as agriculture is its largest single industry, it’s one of the biggest wheat producers in the world. Saskatchewan also exports massive amounts of potash, critical to the production of fertilizers. Saskatchewan was also the largest producer of uranium in the world at one time. Saskatchewan and Alberta have always made significant contributions to Canada’s economy. Canada wouldn’t be the same if, say, America took over this land instead.
