jul 1, 1958 - Sit-in

Description:

A series of sit-ins held by black students who refused to leave segregated lunch counters was held during this time. It started as a chain from Wichita, Kansas, these students had sat in these lunch rooms and refused to leave until served. The first taking place in Dockum stores, the Dockum Drug Store. This protest apart of the Civil Rights Movement was successful because it had resulted in the removal of segregated seating in all Dockum stores. However, later in 1960, the Greensboro Sit-in was the start of a protest against Woolworth’s policy in refusing African Americans. It was initiated by four black students who had purchased their goods and sat at the lunch counter and asked to be served. They refused to leave until served and these sit-in protests began to occur daily. Soon this form of protest took over southern cities of America (place heavy with segregation laws) but not only in lunch counter areas but in Museums, parks and galleries. These sit-ins had created major loses for companies and Woolworths decided to desegregate lunch counters. By mid-October, Martin Luther King was arrested for four months before being released after intervention from John and Robert Kennedy after sitting in a restaurant.
