The entry of **British textiles**, especially of cotton goods, into Ecuador further undermined the
local textile economy in the nineteenth century. Whereas poor transportation and
communications between regions had provided natural protection for locally produced goods
early in the century, this protection began to decrease as communications were improved
after the 1860s. The result would be a crisis in artisanpeasant production in the northcentral
highlands.
