WHO WAS INVOLVED?
- Roger de Breteuil (Earl of Hereford)
- Ralph de Gael (Earl of East Anglia)
- Waltheof (controlled earldom of Northumbria, and he was Anglo-saxon)

WHY DID THEY REBEL?
- A desire for power
- Unfair inheritance laws
- Changes in the Marcher Earldoms - power began to shift to the king
- Ralph de Gael was an angry man - William didn't support Ralph's marriage and that made him mad

WHAT HAPPENED?
- King Sweyn of Denmark agreed to invade England as Ralph de Gael asked
- Waltheof decided to rebel against William but Waltheof soon changed his mind
- Waltheof told Archbishop Lanfranc and he put down the rebellion
- Roger and Ralph anticipated support from local Anglo-Saxon soldiers and local people but they didn't really care
- Danish ships saw the revolt failing and went back home
- William travelled back from France
- Ralph ran to France

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE EARLS?
- Ralph and Roger had all their land taken away
- Ralph de Gael ran to France
- roger de Breteuil was put in prison
- Waltheof was executed on 31st May 1076
