CAUSES
- William wanted to avenge Robert Cumin, who'd been killed by locals in the north
- He wanted to put a stop to Northern rebellions of Norman rule
- He didn't want people to be able to use the north as a base of attack
EVENTS
- October 1069 to March 1070
- Made north of England uninhabitable, so animals were killed and crops and towns were destroyed
SHORT-TERM OUTCOMES
- ~100,000 people died. Approximately 5% of the English population at the time
- People lost their homes, livestock and crops. A refugee crisis began as people were moving around to find other places to stay
- Cases of cannibalism due to starvation
LONG-TERM OUTCOMES
- William received criticism
- No more rebellions in the north
- It seemed like it worked s it ended the guerrilla war
