Between 1999 and 2019 Australian visitors tripled from 503 000 to 1.5m. USA numbers went from 165 600 to 354 700 while visitors from China went from 16 500 to 436 700 over those same 20 years. (2019) Tourism is now NZ's biggest export industry, contributing 20.4% of total exports. Total annual tourism expenditure has increased by $13.8bn or 50% in the past six years. in 2019 the industry employed 229 566 people directly and another 163 713 indirectly, or 14.4% of the total number of people.
