The Ville du Havre collides with the bark Curacao, which was at anchor at night in the Port of New York The owners of the Curacao sued for $73,000 in damages, in a case that was heard in United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York in April of 1874. District Judge BENEDICT found that both parties were negligent. The Curacao was negligent for not having an adequate warning light. The Ville du Havre was negligent for not using night glasses.
