Gifford Pinchot, who Roosevelt had hired as chief of the Forest Service, criticized Taft's secretary of the interior, Richard Ballinger, for opening public lands in Alaska for private development. Taft stood by Ballinger and fired Pinchot for insubordination. Progressives=mad, conservatives=happy.
