mar 20, 1836 - A Slave's Account

Description:

This is a written account about what a young black man witnessed while he was at the battle of the Alamo. Joe, who was the servant of Colonel Travis, was present at the Alamo when the fight began. It was said that he was the only male who escaped the fort alive. Joe said that everyone had worked very late the previous night, and so everyone was asleep when the Mexicans attacked. However, one man who happened to be awake sounded an alarm for everyone to wake up. Joe, who was sleeping in the same room as Colonel Travis, stated that as soon as the alarm was sounded, Travis sprang out of bed and immediately entered the battle. He told Joe to follow him, and Joe did so. As soon as they entered the battle, Travis was shot down. The Mexicans climbed up the walls of the Alamo and made it inside the fort, attacking everyone within. Travis continued to fight while he was wounded, but he eventually died later on in the battle. Everyone fought until there was one man left, and his name was Warner. He requested to meet with the general of the Mexican army, Santa Anna, but he was ordered to be killed before he could speak to him. Joe went on to say that all the blacks and women were spared in the battle, with the exception of one woman who was accidentally killed.
