Having underestimated the strength of the Fatimid army marching from Ascalon, 200 Crusader knights charged into 5,000 Egyptian infantry and were annihilated. Baldwin retreated to Azaz and took a fresh force by ship to break the blockade of Jaffa. Assisted by 200 French, English and German ships, the Muslims withdrew from the city.
