aug 20, 1099 - Battle of Ascalon
Description:
Soon after the fall of Jerusalem, a 20,000 strong Fatimid army was dispatched from Egypt to recapture the city. The Crusaders met the Muslim force near Ascalon, south of Jerusalem, with an army of 10,000 men. The Christians, under the leadership of Godfrey, launched a surprise attack on the Fatimid encampment and quickly overran their defences. However, Godfrey did not exploit the victory to capture Ascalon and the city would remain in Muslim hands until 1153.
