jun 28, 1969 - Stonewall Riots
Description:
The stone wall riots happened in late June. It started because the police raided the Stonewall Inn, where many people of the LGBTQIA+ community hung out. Same sex relationships were illegal, so the Stonewall Inn was the one of the only places that they could express themselves. The police came early in the morning to arrest people for "Criminal behavior and disorderly conduct." An angry crown gathered around the scene. The crowd started throwing pennies at the police and started screaming "Copper!" or screaming "pigs!" Some people slashed the tires of the police cars. They threw trash and beer bottles. Marsha P. Johnson, a black transgender woman participated in the riots and later established The Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). Sylvia Rivera was a Latina-American drag queen. She was a very radical gay and transgender activist. She is also known for establishing STAR. Modern-day pride parades take place in June around the time of the Stonewall riots.
