may 1, 1959 - Clashes at Cooper's Do-Nuts

Description:

The event happened in Los Angeles, in May of 1959. It was happening because the police were harassing the LGBTQIA+ community that hung out at the diner. There was a Los Angeles law that states that one's gender presentation must match the gender on their ID. That is why the police targeted the trans people there. The police arrested many people, but one time, people started fighting back. They started throwing coffee, donuts, cups and trash until the police fled. People wanted to make Coopers Do-nuts a historical site, but the police had "lost the records from that incident." It is belived to be the first LGBTQ+ uprising, becasue it was 10 years before the famous Stonewall Riots.
