jan 1, 1896 - Thomson's Discovery

Description:

JJ. Thomson used the studies and understanding of Dalton's studies and discovered the electron and it's negative charge in the atomic model. Now Thomson thought and understood that if there is a negative charge (electron), there must also be a positive charge. This is why he made and proposed the plum pudding model, this had a ball of positive charge and negative charged electron's scattered through out it. Thomson used a cathode ray tube to find out about the electrons, he put two metal pieces (one cathode and one anode) in the tube and gave it electrical power. By doing this, the cathode metal shot out a cathode ray that gets attracted to the anode piece of metal and overshoots the the end of the tube showing some light. After doing this, Thomson gets curious and checks if the cathode ray is electrically charged. To check this, he gets two metal pieces(one positively charged and one negatively), puts them next to the tube and sees the ray going more towards the positive charged metal. After examining this he concludes that the ray must be made up of negatively charged particles(electrons) because they are attracted to the positive charge. Even after this he measured the cathode ray in many different aspects and then found out that the electrons were about 1000 times lighter than the hydrogen. Because of this experiment we could understand the relationship and existence of electrons and protons on the atoms stucture.
