Description:

In early BC the Greeks believed that matter was made up of four elements. Earth, fire, water, and air. They also believed that matter could be broken down into smaller and smaller pieces forever and that you could never reach the end.

Not much enabled the Greeks to find this as the information as all wrong, however this did eventually lead to further understanding as this common theory would of never been disproved if it was never created.
