The Freedmen's Bureau was established by Congress as the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands on March 3, 1865. The Freedmen’s Bureau provided food, housing, medical aid, established schools and offered legal assistance. It also attempted to give former slaves land confiscated or abandoned during the Civil War.
