jan 1, 1904 - Model of the Atom: Plum Pudding (Thomson)

Description:

J.J. Thompson was a British scientist and the founder of the Plum Pudding Model. This model depicted the atom as electrons swimming in a sphere of positively charged matter. In 1897, he conducted an experiment with a glass tube. In this experiment, he pumped out most of the air inside the tube and created an electronic circuit with the cathode on one end of the tube and the anode on the other. Thompson saw a current of energy flowing from the cathode through to the anode. This showed that atoms had an electrical source in them, electrons. Since there was a negative charge within the atom, J.J. Thomspon introduce the concept of there being a positive charge that neutralised the atom. With this hypothesis, he designed the Plum Pudding model.
