Description:

In 1989, F.W. de Klerk was elected president of South Africa. He departed from the country’s ways of apartheid and released Nelson Mandela from his life sentence in prison after only 24 years. De Klerk also legalized the African National Congress which Mandela had led in an effort to win rights for blacks in South Africa. On April 27, 1994, voters elected Madela as the new president of South Africa and de Klerk as the deputy president. Mandela was the first black president.
