The Star Wars program was proposed by President Reagan as the biggest arms buildup in American history. Reagan wanted to develop new weapons and enlarge the fleet. He asked Congress to fund a system of orbiting satellites that could fire laser beams to shoot down any Soviet missiles launched toward the US. The program was dubbed Star Wars by the press. The cost of the program was $1.5 trillion over a 5 year period.
