The southern gentry were a group of elite colonists who ruled over the white yeomen families, tenant farmers, and slaves, enjoying lavish wealth and power in the colonies that they couldn't obtain in Britain due to inferior status. The southern gentry were similar to the future robber barons, as they exploited the lower class in order to get wealthy, the main difference being that they did not rely on slave labor and tried to disguise their corruption.
