aug 1, 1964 - Gulf of Tonkin Incident

Description:

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident was an incident where North Vietnamese warships attacked two U.S. destroyer ships.

In response, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression" by North Vietnam. In addition, the resolution gave the President unlimited authority to manage U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War without a formal declaration of war.

Afterwards, the U.S. would become directly involved in the Vietnam War.
