Description:
No candidate received majority of votes in presidential election. Clay (fourth place) was eliminated, and House had to choose between Adams, Crawford, and Jackson. Clay threw his support behind Adams in exchange for position in Adam's cabinet (secretary of state). Tarnished Clay's reputation. Jackson and Crawford supporters formed Democratic Party, while Adams and Clay supporters formed Whig Party.
