dec 8, 1886 - American Federation of Labor
Description:
The purpose of the AFL was to organize skilled workers into national unions consisting of others in the same trade. Their purpose was not political, and aimed simply at shorter hours, higher wages, and better working conditions. Mostly created from those defecting from the Knights of Labor after the Haymarket Square Riot months earlier. While origionally prohibiting women and other minorities such as Chinese and Mexicans under founder Samuel Gompers, the organization became more inclusive and began its fight for women's sufferage.
