Stephen Douglas had most chance of winning election, but radical Southerners wanted James Buchanan, who was stronger for slavery.
Douglas nominated by compromise Democrats - Enforce Fugitive Slave Law, popular sovereignty.
Many Southern delegates supporting Buchanan left the party, held their own convention, nominated John C. Breckenridge - unrestricted slavery, annex Cuba.
Democratic Party breaks apart.
