jan 19, 1877 - Compromise of 1877
Description:
The results of the election remain among the most disputed ever. Although it is not disputed that Tilden outpolled Hayes in the popular vote, there were wide allegations of electoral fraud, election violence, and other disfranchisement of predominately-Republican black voters. The compromise ended Reconstruction under the terms of an informal, unwritten agreement that gave Republican Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency if the North removed Southern troops ending occupation and enforcement of reconstruction policies. No bueno.
